The Ride of Honor: A Tribute to Veterans and Supporting their Children

TWIN COUNTY MEDIA

On Saturday, November 9, 2024, the Twin Counties will once again host the annual Ride of Honor, a charity motorcycle ride with a dual purpose: honoring veterans and raising funds for local veteran initiatives and Camp Cocoon, a camp for grieving children. This powerful event is aimed at recognizing and supporting veterans in our community, while also providing critical help to children in need. Best of all, veterans ride FREE, making it a special tribute to those who have served.

The Ride of Honor, now a staple in the Twin Counties, has two main objectives. The first is to raise funds for local veteran non-profit organizations that offer crucial services and assistance to veterans. The second goal is to support Camp Cocoon, a one-day camp held at Ashlyn Stables in Nashville, NC, designed for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one. In 2023, both of these objectives were successfully achieved, thanks to the overwhelming community support.

The 2024 Ride of Honor kicks off with a Pre-Ride Party on Friday, November 8th. Riders are invited to gather at the NC Beer Factory, located at 500 S Wesleyan Blvd in Rocky Mount, for an evening of live music and delicious food. Check-in will be available during this time, encouraging participants to settle in and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow riders before the big day.

On Saturday, November 9th, the ride will begin at Flying Iron Harley Davidson, located at 928 N Winstead Avenue Rocky Mount. Registration opens at 8:30am, with breakfast available for participants. Veterans, in particular, are given special honor throughout the day, beginning with a Veterans Ceremony at 11:00 am. This ceremony offers a moment of reflection and gratitude for those who have served our nation. A ride briefing will follow at 11:45am, ensuring all bikers are prepared for the journey ahead. Kickstands go up at 12:00pm sharp, marking the start of the ride.

Following the ride, participants will return to Flying Iron Harley Davidson for "The After Burn," a post-ride celebration from 1-3pm. Riders and the public alike can enjoy a free lunch, live music, and a vendor fair. The community is invited to join in this lively celebration and show gratitude to those who have served in the Armed Forces.

The funds raised during the Ride of Honor have a meaningful impact. Half of the proceeds will go to local nonprofits that provide critical services to veterans, while the remaining half will help send veterans’ children and local children who have experienced loss to Camp Cocoon. This camp offers a safe space for grieving children to heal and connect with others who understand their pain, providing vital emotional support.

The Ride of Honor is more than just a motorcycle event; it's a powerful demonstration of community spirit, honoring those who have served our country and offering comfort to the next generation. By participating, riders and attendees not only show their gratitude but also contribute to making a difference in the lives of local veterans and children.
