Run, Climb, and Conquer for a Cause— Tackle the Tar Returns May 17
An Unforgettable Day of Adventure and Giving Back

TWIN COUNTY MEDIA

Mark your calendars for May 17, 2025! Tackle the Tar, a 5K obstacle race hosted by the Rocky Mount Rotary Club, is returning to the Rocky Mount Sports Complex. Starting at 9:00 AM, runners will face 15+ obstacles through the scenic Battle Park, including a mud pit, tire mountain, and challenging climbs. But Tackle the Tar isn’t just about the physical challenge—it’s about giving back. All proceeds from this exhilarating race go directly toward funding college scholarships for deserving students in the Rocky Mount area.

A Tradition of Community Impact

Since its inception in 2016, Tackle the Tar has raised over $600,000 in scholarships, helping countless local youth pursue higher education. The event continues to grow each year, with an increase in both participants and funds raised. What started with 320 runners and $30,000 raised in its first year has grown to 800 runners and $100,000 raised in 2024. Every dollar counts, and your participation or sponsorship directly supports the next generation of leaders.

This Year’s Thrilling 5K Obstacle Course

This year’s course promises even more exciting challenges, including:

  • The Great Tar Wall: Climb a 16-foot wall.

  • Mud Pit w/ Roadkill: Pull yourself through a muddy pit over rubber tires.

  • Log Jump: Leap over obstacles made of natural logs.

  • Spider Web: Navigate through a challenging web of ropes.

  • Tire Mountain: Scale a towering mountain of tires.

  • Culvert Tunnel: Crawl under an 18-wheeler truck and through tunnels beneath US-64.

And so much more! All racers will receive a T-shirt, medal, one free beer (for those 21+), and a goodie bag.

The event features various heats throughout the day, including:

  • 8:45 AM: Kids Run (1-mile fun run for ages 8-13)

  • 9:00 AM - 10:20 AM: Competitive Heats

  • 9:00 AM - 10:20 AM: Competitive and Fun Run Heats
