Natron Energy to Bring Over 1,000 Jobs to Kingsboro Business Park
TWIN COUNTY MEDIA
In a major economic development for the Twin Counties, Natron Energy, Inc., a global leader in sodium-ion battery technology, has announced plans to establish the first sodium-ion battery gigafactory in the United States at Kingsboro Business Park. This significant investment, valued at nearly $1.4 billion, is expected to bring over 1,000 jobs to the Rocky Mount, Nash, and Edgecombe County area.
Governor Roy Cooper hailed the announcement as a milestone for North Carolina’s clean energy sector. "Natron Energy’s decision to build this large and unique battery factory in our state will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while creating good jobs right here in eastern North Carolina," Cooper said.
Natron Energy, based in Santa Clara, California, is renowned for its innovative sodium-ion batteries, which offer safer and more sustainable alternatives to traditional lead-acid and lithium-ion technologies. Unlike conventional batteries, Natron’s products do not rely on rare earth metals, making them a more environmentally friendly option. The company’s new facility in Kingsboro will dramatically increase its production capacity to meet growing global demand.
The project is a significant win for the local economy, with the new jobs expected to average salaries well above the county average, injecting approximately $68 million into the regional payroll annually.
Natron’s co-CEO, Colin Wessells, expressed excitement about the company’s expansion into North Carolina. "The Kingsboro megasite offers not only ideal site characteristics but also access to a world-class labor force and a business-friendly climate," Wessells noted.
The state of North Carolina will support the project through a Jobs Development Investment Grant (JDIG), which could provide up to $21.7 million in incentives over 12 years. Additionally, Edgecombe County is poised to receive up to $30 million from the state’s new Megasite Readiness Program to further enhance infrastructure at the Kingsboro site.
Bob Pike, President and CEO of the Carolinas Gateway Partnership, emphasized the broader impact of this investment. "Natron Energy’s commitment to our region underscores the strength of our community and the potential for continued economic growth," Pike said.
This development marks a pivotal moment for the Twin Counties, setting the stage for sustained economic advancement and positioning the region as a key player in the clean energy industry.
