Fishing Opportunities

Anglers will find the Tar River teeming with various fish species. Shiloh Landing, located just north of Princeville in Edgecombe County, is a favored spot among local fishermen. The area features a steep pathway down the bluff, allowing for boat launches and offering access to prime fishing waters. Historically significant, Shiloh Landing has been a hub for fishing activities, with enthusiasts often hoping to catch shad, rockfish, bass, and bream.

For a more tailored fishing experience, Tar River Co. offers guided fly fishing and light tackle trips led by local expert Captain Will Paul. A native of Eastern North Carolina, Paul founded Tar River Co. in 2020 after years of experience, including instructing for The Orvis Company and guiding in Alaska’s Bristol Bay.

Captain Will specializes in targeting both resident and migratory species across over 300 miles of the Tar, Neuse, and Roanoke Rivers. Seasonal trips include:

  • Shad      Fishing (Late February – Early April): Pursuing American and Hickory      Shad during their annual spawning runs.

  • Spring      Striped Bass (April – May): Fishing for Striped Bass, especially in      Weldon, NC, during one of the Southeast’s most prolific freshwater      migrations.

  • Warm      Water Species (Fall): Chasing Largemouth Bass, Bowfin, and Longnose      Gar in the region's vibrant fall fishery.

All trips are personalized, educational, and can include equipment, lunch, and even airport shuttles. Learn more or book your trip at tarriverco.com.
