By interviewing the owners, I gained insights into what makes each store special. Whether you're in search of trendy apparel, one-of-a-kind gifts, or a memorable shopping experience, these boutiques showcase the best of what the Twin Counties have to offer.


The Yellow Tulip Boutique- Rocky Mount, NC


Diana Alford, the founder of The Yellow Tulip Boutique (TYT), embarked on her entrepreneurial journey while juggling a full-time job and family responsibilities. Her love for crafts led her from making jewelry on Etsy to exploring wholesale opportunities at AmericasMart, eventually inspiring her to open a boutique in a market with limited options.


Diana explains that TYT stands out for its diverse offerings and approachable pricing. “We cater to everyone with both casual and dressy options,” she says. “Our prices range from low to mid, making fashion accessible for the everyday woman.”

The Yellow Tulip attracts and retains customers through engaging social media content, a rewarding loyalty program, and convenient in-store pickup for local shoppers. Diana’s marketing expertise helps make TYT a go-to destination for both fashion and community involvement.


One of Diana’s most memorable experiences was the Bailey’s Fine Jewelry fashion show, where she received heartfelt compliments from customers. “It was incredibly emotional to see so many women appreciate our clothes and feel confident,” she recalls.


Beguiling Boutique- Rocky Mount, NC


Chiqueta Grant, the owner of Beguiling Boutique, followed her lifelong passion for fashion to open a store that offers something special for women in her community. Her goal was to create a boutique that combined her love for fashion with a mission to provide a unique shopping experience.


Beguiling Boutique stands out through its commitment to offering a curated collection of stylish, high-quality garments. “We focus on personalized attention and creating a welcoming atmosphere for every customer,” Chiqueta says. “Our aim is to make each visitor feel valued and confident.”


To attract and retain customers, Chiqueta uses a combination of strategic digital marketing and exceptional in-store service Her approach includes engaging Instagram campaigns, personalized customer interactions and, a dedication to providing individualized styling advice.


Chiqueta faces the common challenges of small business ownership, including financial management and marketing. “Balancing inventory growth with financial stability is a constant challenge,” she admits. “But seeing the business grow and maintaining our commitment to quality makes it all worthwhile.”


One of Chiqueta’s proudest achievements was the launch of Beguiling Boutique’s online store. “Expanding our reach to a national and international audience was a significant milestone for us,” she reflects.


Off the Main- Tarboro, NC


Brooke, the owner of Off the Main, has always been passionate about clothing, whether it’s women’s fashion or the perfect smocked outfit. This love for fashion is what inspired her to start her boutique.


When asked what sets her business apart from others, Brooke attributes it to her customers. “Our customers, they are the absolute best and over the years the personal relationships that I have developed is what truly sets us apart.”


To attract and retain customers, Brooke focuses on being personable and remembering what her customers like.


One of the biggest challenges Brooke faces as a small business owner is time management. “Balancing a business and family is very delicate,” she says.


Brooke believes the true success of her business lies in its ability to make a regular impact on the community. “Whether by donating to our local schools, 4-H, families in need, foster care, or sponsoring a tee ball team, it is the regular everyday things we strive to do that make our business memorable.”


Clair de Lune- Rocky Mount, NC


Amanda Smith, the owner of Clair de Lune, has always been driven by her love for textiles and a desire to give back to her community. After graduating from Meredith College with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Business, Amanda decided to open Clair de Lune in her hometown of Rocky Mount, blending her creative passion with her business insight.


Amanda describes what sets Clair de Lune apart as its intimate setting, personalized customer service, and thoughtfully curated inventory. “We offer a unique shopping experience with fun events, drawings, and discounts,” she says. “Our team is dedicated to providing exceptional service and building lasting relationships with our customers.”


To attract and retain customers, Clair de Lune focuses on quality and service. The boutique’s friendly atmosphere, extensive clothing selection, and strong social media presence help bring in shoppers from around the world.


However, running a small business comes with its challenges. Amanda cites competing with big box stores, managing inventory, and handling rising costs as her biggest hurdles. Despite these obstacles, a standout moment for her was being featured in Our State magazine’s September issue. “It was a moment when all the hard work paid off, and I knew we were doing things right,” Amanda reflects.


Bad Habits Boutique- Tarboro, NC


Priscilla Whitley and Renee Owens, the co-owners of Bad Habits Boutique, turned their passion for fashion into a business by setting up shop inside Sunshine Hair Designs. Their vision was to offer trendy, affordable fashion in a welcoming environment.


Priscilla and Renee’s boutique distinguishes itself by featuring handmade jewelry from local artists and providing a wide range of clothing sizes from XS to 3XL. “We aim to create a quiet, private shopping experience,” Priscilla explains. “Our space is designed to help customers explore fashion trends comfortably.”


To attract and keep customers, Bad Habits Boutique leverages a mix of community involvement, a rewards system, and engaging social media content. They also host events and sponsor local initiatives to build strong community connections.


One of their most cherished moments was seeing customers leave the boutique feeling confident and happy in their new outfits. “It’s so rewarding to see our clients, especially older ones, find styles they love and feel great about themselves,” Renee shares.
