From a relaxing lake day, to a sandy beach, a day at the zoo, or a fun river adventure, there's something for everyone to enjoy within driving distance. Here are some of our top recommendations:
Lake Gaston
Located about an hour drive from the Twin Counties, Lake Gaston is a perfect destination for a relaxing day by the water. Check out the Lake Gaston Day Use Area, located at 2369 Jack Brown Road, Littleton, NC 27850. This public park features designated swimming areas, picnic tables, grills, fishing area and ADA-accessible fishing pier, children’s playground, public boat ramp, and horseshoe pits. Atlantic Beach, NC
For a laid-back beach day, head to Atlantic Beach, about 2 hours and 15 minutes from the Twin Counties. With its beautiful sandy shores and charming local businesses, it's an ideal spot for relaxation and fun. Asheboro Zoo
For an affordable and exciting day getaway with kids, the North Carolina Zoo, located in Asheboro is a fantastic option Located about 2 hours and 15 minutes from the Twin Counties, the NC Zoo is open daily from 9am-5pm every day of the week. The zoo offers daily activities, events for kids, and various dining options. Tar River Life
For a fun summer day in the water, check out Tar River Life in Bunn, just about 30 minutes from the Twin Counties. This privately owned and maintained facility offers a variety of water activities, such as kayak rentals, stand-up paddleboards, and tubing for all ages. Reservations are required for activities. TRL also has a second location in Wendell (about 45 minutes away), at the Robertson Millpond Reserve. This location exclusively offers kayak rentals and excursions.
