Amazon’s Eastern North Carolina Expansion Signals Potential Growth for Edgecombe County

TWIN COUNTY MEDIA

In a significant move that could strengthen Edgecombe County’s economic landscape, Amazon has purchased more than 77 acres within the Tarboro Commerce Center. Deed records show that an LLC associated with the Seattle-based tech and e-commerce giant acquired the land on November 7 for over $500,000. The property, positioned near McNair Road and U.S. Highway 64, offers prime access to major transportation routes, making it an attractive investment for industrial and distribution purposes.

While Amazon has yet to disclose its plans for the newly acquired land, the purchase has already sparked widespread speculation about the company’s intentions. As one of the world’s largest corporations, Amazon has a track record of investing in strategically located distribution centers and logistics hubs.

The move marks Amazon’s latest real estate acquisition in North Carolina, where it has been steadily expanding its presence. Earlier this year, the company opened a substantial 620,000-square-foot import processing facility in Johnston County's West Smithfield Industrial Park.

This facility, often referred to as a cross-dock, operates as a logistical center to streamline Amazon's supply chain and meet increasing demand in the Triangle area. Amazon also operates a large distribution facility along Interstate 40 in Garner, opened in recent years to support the region’s surging population and e-commerce needs.

This trend of expansion isn’t confined to the Triangle. In September, Triangle Business Journal reported that Charlotte-based SunCap Property Group—a frequent Amazon collaborator—filed plans to build a 65,200-square-foot distribution center in Southern Pines. SunCap’s past involvement in Amazon warehousing projects further suggests that Amazon may be scaling its operations across North Carolina to improve delivery times and service reach.

For Edgecombe County, Amazon’s land purchase represents another step in a series of promising developments. Earlier this year, Natron Energy, a California-based battery manufacturer, announced plans to invest $1.4 billion to establish a battery manufacturing facility at the Kingsboro Megasite in Edgecombe County. The project, expected to create over 1,000 jobs with an average salary exceeding $64,000, underscores Edgecombe County’s rising profile as a favorable location for major industrial investments.

Amazon’s acquisition in Tarboro suggests that Edgecombe County could be on the verge of another major economic boost, bringing with it the potential for new jobs, increased investment, and further infrastructure development. As the area waits for additional details on Amazon’s plans, the region remains optimistic that this acquisition will enhance Edgecombe County’s position as a key player in North Carolina’s economic future.
